There is a pointer, its on the back of the bell housing inspection plate. These marks are use for "static" setting of the timing. If you prefer you can set the static timing, then rotate the distributor back a forth to find a sweet spot.

The mag should trip exactly when the 2nd notch on your crank pulley comes in line with the pointer. For safety of hand starting, @ TDC. A hair late is better than too early.
